Every night my husband goes to sleep with a sound machine roaring. He finds it hard to sleep without the “White Noise” the sound machine makes. This phenomenon is known as “white noise.” It works so well that white noise machines are available most anywhere. Many use them as a sleep aid, but they also great for studying or focusing on work. The device blocks background sounds as I read silently to myself. Some businesses even provide employees white noise CDs and headphones to block out irritating distractions.
Although white noise carries benefits, Do we have white noise in our spiritual lives? Do your to-do lists nag at you. Emails demand our attention. People I love, ask me for favors. My church desperately needs volunteers. My weary body wants to take a nap. We are all stressed to the max! All of this becomes white noise to our souls.
This white noise of life causes us to become hard of hearing—spiritually. It drowns out the Lord Jesus beckoning us to come sit quietly at His feet. Luke 10:38-42 demonstrates a wonderful example of a woman like me who has too much white noise in her life:
38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Oh, how I long for Jesus to say, “Mitzi has chosen what is better and it will not be taken from her.”
Although we know it will be a struggle, this year let’s strive to be more like Mary and less like Martha. We want to eliminate the white noise of busyness. Let us desire to have ears that hear the voice of my Lord.
Would you like to join me in a commitment to eliminate spiritual white noise from your life?
